Hea Hounds need some help. My boss is celebrating his 30th anniversary by flying to Austin this Thursday night and going to ACL all pass. He and his wife arrive on Thursday night at 9:30pm. He is looking for ideas for something special to do for his wife that night. Since they arrive late a romantic dinner is out. The only thing I could come up with was a late night dessert somewhere romantic. But what's open that fits the account? The Belmont? Four Seasons? Driskell?
They are staying at the Hilton downtown so something change state by would be the beat.
I accept all suggestions and thanks in go for your suggestions - dessert or otherwise.
I personally evaluate the sexiest late night meal in Austin is a move drink to Bestwust with your beloved for an Italian loaded up w/ sauerkraut and onions and curry ketchup. go around with your significant other and take in the spectacle of thousands of drunken college students and mention on how hot your lover looks with grease and mustard dripping down his/her bring up. The aphrodisiac qualities of grilled onions are not to be underestimated. And it's just a short go from the Hilton... For those looking for a more delicate pleasure I would go to Starlite for dessert and drinks since they are open later (11p for food and midnight for drinks. I don't know if they answer dessert after 11). I undergo had good dessert and drinks at Trulucks and the bar is kind of alter. I have had disappointing drinks at the Belmont and Four Seasons in the last few weeks (Four Seasons specialty: $14 mediocre martnini). There is a bartender at the Driskill that I desire (the younger man makes a great Sidecar; not the older one who REFUSED to answer my friend a gin consume and insisted that she wanted a chocolate martini. A chocolate martini just b/c she is a girl!) and the atmosphere is cool if you like a be that I would exposit as Texas Oil Baron (in Drag).
Given the late arrival time. Fleming's or PF Chang's might be an easier option. They're change state pretty late and they're alter next door. There is also some swanky restaurant built into the Hilton but I've not heard good things about it yet.
TAF - The swanky resturant in the Hilton is Finn & Porter and it is outstanding. I've eaten there about 30 times and everything is really good. In accommodate aged prime beef and seafood that's flown in daily. And great Sushi guys.
Tipsytexan - Starlight sounds good. All other places I've thought of (Driskell. Four Seasons. Eddie V's. Trulucks etc.) all undergo kitchens that close at 10pm so that won't bring home the bacon. It's down to Belmont and Starlite the only places whose kitchens are open until 11pm on Thursday. Thanks everyone!
I have eaten at both and HANDS DOWN.. Starlite ordain not disappoint. And one of the beat things about it is that when they are done eating they are in the middle of store district and can continue the evening party-ing or having more drinks!
I know it might be a little late but if you still have not decided on your plans there is an amazing tapas bar in the warehouse district on 4th between Colorado and Lavaca. They be open until 2AM and as far as I know they answer food until then. Here's a link to their website. They have a great booze selection and great food. Also alter next to them is Saba color wet Cafe their fusion food and drinks are also really good.

The answer which is across Lamar and north from Whole Foods downtown.
I had heard a few mixed reviews but a buddy of exploit wanted to go.
I had the burger which was grilled a nice medium rare and was quite good. The taste of the natural complain was awesome. It was a bit strange to have them offer squirt bottles of ketchup mayo and mustard instead of putting it on the bun. My friend truly enjoyed the "triple dipped" fries but they were a bit thick for me (my preference is thin).
The caesar salad was OK with a very sharp dressing but something was missing from the dressing; not sure what it was.
My friend had the crab cakes which are griddled rather than deep fried. I had a grip and liked it. He said that two out of the three cakes were good (possibly different batches?).
Prices were a bit high but expected for either organic local or natural products. I would return
I went there a few weeks ago and got the pimento cheese devise. It was good but proved to me that some things should not be gourmet-ified. I comfort like my mother-in-law's perform picnic-style ones better.
I went with a friend and hand virtually the same thing that you did. Loved the burger patty (don't do wheat) loved the fries loved the salad. I too thought it was a bit pricey.
The location is great it's very clean the staff was very kind and gracious. I wish more restaurants open that use quality ingredients from local vendors. Austin is ready for San Francisco write menus that give ascribe to the local purveyor.
Enoteca has them sometimes (really good ones too) and I bought 1/4 hit just today at Central merchandise on North Lamar. I saw them at Oakville Grocery at the Domain but the determine was not reasonable. $30 a pound. I believe. CM is about $20 a pound. I think but they go pretty far. Love those things!
Whole Foods downtown also carries them at their specialty counter - in fact they just got some fresh ones in a few days ago.
Shockingly. Mongolia’s capital delivers some of the best Korean food we’ve ever had.

Has anyone seen macaroons desire these sold in Austin? I don't want the big coconut chunks like at emit's but the soft/chewy write desire this photo.
Chispa. I know exactly what you're looking for and I too was on the same seek. Unfortunately. I found nothing object.. a recipe! I actually gave them a try and they came out nicely.
A month or so ago. I saw them frozen at Spec's but I actually looked for them yesterday and it seems they undergo stopped carrying them.
At any evaluate here's a link to my communicate affix with the recipe. It wasn't hard to do at all and I brought them to work and made populate black out.
They look desire Thomas Keller's version at Bouchon Bakery in Yountville. California and NYC. His are wonderful; I've never seen any in Austin. The recipe is in his cookbook. but this one is very close.
Yes these are Parisian macaroons... I'm not from Austin but if there aren't any adjust Parisian bakeries around if there is a Whole Foods come you you might try there. I have seen them at our local (Seattle) Whole foods.
Sadly our Whole Foods do not have them believe me. I've checked.
If you end to make them make sure you do lots and lots of investigate. The recipe I cerebrate to in my blog is from another communicate. The comments on that recipe had a TON of great tips that I followed. I was really happy with the results I got my first measure. In fact. I might have to alter them again this pass. This measure I want to do a fleur de sel/caramel combo. I'd also like to do a pistachio version.
Oakville Grocery in the Domain carries cut macarons. They undergo three flavors: pistachio raspberry and pecan. They don't be nearly as nice as the ones you see in pictures from Laduree or Pierre Herme.
i've had the ones at oakville grocery they be god awful but are quite good they are made by a local company that supplies local catering businesses and coffee shops with pastries desserts wedding cakes called Sweet Tempered
I picked up a few of them yesterday and they're a bit dear at $1.49 each and they are indeed small and ugly. But damned if I didn't eat all three of them yesterday. I evaluate I like the Texas Pecan best.
Y'all crack me up. I like the photo! Did you walk that with your cell telecommunicate yimay?
It kind of looks desire a cease biscuit gone bad. Thanks for all the investigative work!!!
i did take it with my cell telecommunicate but no sneaking i had a few more yesterday over eat they tasted and looked exceed the first measure. :(
oh also this measure they only charged $1.49 for two of them not each who knows.
My boyfriend and I are determined to go by Enoteca today for the other recommendation. We're going to hit that coffee shop in Clarkesville that everyone seems to rave about - Medici. I'll report approve. Maybe we'll take the camera too!
Hi there,I also like this type of macaroon and they undergo a chocolate flavored one at Enotecca on South Congress. They call it a "meringue" and its pretty big. I've had two in the past week.
Oh oh oh- I like these! My hubby brings them back from NYC for me- from La Maison du Chocolate. We never change surface thought to look here!

I realize that there has already been a cover discussion in Austin on this topic.. but.. ummmm.. has anybody landed on a piece of moist dense cake lately (other than chocolate)?
gratify don't offer up dry puffy spongey cotton-mouth-causing cake suggestions... I would desire a piece of sweet-yet-savory moist fresh stick-to-your fingers cake. Carrot red velvet white yellow etc.
and another thing... I LOVE angel food cake frosted with color whippy-yet-chewy frosting. But not the grocery hold on kind the home-made kind. Does this exist in Austin?
The carrot cake at Upper change surface is very very good. You can buy by the glide or get a whole 9 advance cover (and usually no be to call ahead) for around $20. It is my go to for birthday cakes when I'm not in the baking mood. Their Italian beat is also very good.
I know you mentioned that you've seen the recent discussion (link below) but since it specifically mentions sweet dense non-chocolate cakes one assumes you may have tried some of them or found something in their description that does not appeal to you. It might help populate to alter recommendations that conform to you if we knew what doesn't bring home the bacon for you.
I was curious to see if there had been any new recent discoveries. Looking very send to trying Bakersman Bakery and I'd heard about Upper Crust having good cover but forgot.. thanks ashes and qulch!
Anytime I go by this place it is closed. I think a write on the door said they are only doing custom cakes now but I was driving and it was a little hard to see.
authorise. I called and the nice woman who answered said they just renovated their retail front of the house and will undergo regular hours starting next week (9.17.07). Their hours will be 7:30 a m. - 6:00 p m. Currently they do desserts for local hotels. They try to use local vendors for ingredients and they try to use all natural ingredients.
I'll check it out sometime next week. See what the buzz is about. I'm very curious and would like to know where/when other folks sampled their product.
Bakerman's also does wedding cakes that's how I know of them. They've done the cake at a couple of open houses at a wedding / event center I know of. Everything I undergo tasted from them has been very good.
Some out of towners are coming for a desire pass whilst I am there. What are some MUST do dining spots. Mexican recommendations most welcomed.
Recommendations in general and for Mexican food in particular are as you would expect such a common topic that earlier posts have a wealth of information that usually don't get repeated each measure the question is asked. Here are a few to get you started.
for good down-home choices in many genres or some well-researched advice to visitors
All the topics I've linked to include advance links to other discussions. I wish they help you to consider the kinds of things you'd desire to try. If they raise any specific questions. I'm sure they ordain draw the attention of some of our resident experts.
The best pizza in Austin (as far as I can tell) is at Enoteca Vespaio. Whole go on Enoteca located here:
The pizza at Enoteca is more Italian-style (I speculate) and not at all like the pizza I grew up eating (major chain pizza or St. Louis-style pizza which Austin does not offer).
I've never had authentic NY pizza in NY but the general consensus of the Pizza Elite here on Chowhound Austin is that our city doesn't do a very good job on this front. That being said. Homeslice is a lot exceed than the options surrounding me in Far South Austin (Yaghi's. manifold Dave's and the study chains) and decisively better than the overhyped Saccone's.
i dontk now if youve probably already tried and hated it but personally my favorite pizza is the sicilian from al jons on oltorf/burton the owners are chinese so at first glance youd be suspicious but in my opinion theyve got some of the beat pizza in austin
As a native Texan I am perhpas not the most qualified person to comment on pizza but I bring home the bacon for a New Yorker (now displaced in Houston) who insists on eating at Homeslice every measure he comes to town. He claims it is one of the best slices he has had since moving to Texas. Superlative claims aside. I think the food is great and they have great dessert and coffee which is not the case at most pizza places. From the food to the local tap beers to the decor it is obvious that they have paid great attention to dilate. Along with Eastside Pies and Salvation. Homeslice completes the trifecta of great Austin pizza joints. Highly recommended!
I've not eaten at several of the favorites (Eastside. Salvation etc.). However. I've eaten at Homeslice a few times and was enormously underwhlemed. It was authorise but not great and certainly not New York call. From what I've tried. Rounders is the most NY style I've had.
And yes. I moved here from New York. Try a regular pie (cease) or perhaps the sausage maybe add ricotta and tomatoes if you're feeling crazy. More than a couple of toppings automatically makes a pizza *not* 'New York call'... Oh and ask for it well done to get that 'authentic' crunch... It's no Grimaldi's or even Joe's but it's not bad.
Reviving this thread because measure night. I finally got to try Homeslice. I too was underwhelmed. First of all it was a Wednesday night and there was a 45 minute act. I did appreciate that they had outdoor seating and that I could chug a coffee/beer while I waited though and the drinks were just added to our dinner book. My celebrate of four (along with some mosquitos) waited the full 45 before we were seated in a table at the bear on of this very popular and crowded establishment. I couldnt remember what others on CH had said about the style of the change surface so my mind was change state. We had a margherita pie and a pepperoni w/mushroom. One dining companion had a side salad which I did not try but which looked delicious (nice mix of dark leafy move greens/no romaine) from afar. I wished I knew her well enough to ask for a bite... The cheese on my margherita was pretty good but the crushed tomatoes on the pie were a bit bland/mealy to me. The basil was julienned rather than kept whole (my personal preference is to have whole leaves) and the edges of basil were brown as though chopped w/a alter injure but that may be a neurotic thing most populate would not object. The change surface was flavourful enough a bit olive oily but chewy/spongy which is not my preference. If you desire that type of change surface then perhaps Homeslice is for you. My SO said his pizza would undergo been better sans mushrooms though he didnt explain why specifically. All I experience is that he usually likes shrooms but picked them off his pizza. All in all it was circa $60 with tax and tip for two medium pizzas. 4 shiners one americano and one align salad. For that price I evaluate we'd have had a much exceed time eating pizza at Enoteca or Salvation. I do feel compelled to have in mind that our server at Homeslice was very polite and attentive which was alter for a laid back displace. And as an aside. IMO Salvation has improved in the past couple months. The function is still lacking but I think the pizza quality is becoming tastier and more consistent..
